Take Care of Yourself, Mama

0

I don’t know a mom who isn’t overworked, underpaid, over scheduled, and overwhelmed. Whether we work in the home or out of it, we don’t clock out at 5. Even if we have a partner, the work never stops.

Between mountains of laundry, keeping our children fed and healthy, and excelling in our careers, we’re master jugglers.

Friend running for office? I got that. Need help with the PTO? I got that. Additional civic duties? I will definitely make time for that. But when it comes to taking care of my needs, I fail. Miserably.

So I’ve decided to begin taking care of me. And it might sound selfish but it’s anything but. After all, if I don’t take care of myself, how in the world can I take care of my family?

The latest adventure in self-care has landed me in the Holy Land. That’s right, as I write this I’m self-caring myself away on a bus in Israel.

Upon telling folks about my two weeks abroad, there has been acceptance as well as judgement. Some have commended me on taking time to feed my spirit and my soul. After all, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Others have question after question: “Who is taking care of your son?” is the most popular. As if it’s their business.

Thankfully, I have a supportive partner who urged me to take care of my needs and shocker – he’s not a babysitter, he’s a dad, and he has it covered.

In the day to day, we have more accessible ways to take care of ourselves. Whether it’s a candlelit bath, a couple of hours of peace in the morning, or half a Saturday for pampering at the local spa, we can always find a way to fill our own cups.

After all, if we can’t fill our own cups, how can we fill others’?

Sending you mamas the time, strength, and opportunity to heal your souls. Your family will thank you.
