Near His Heart Touched My Heart: Memoirs of a Special Needs Mom

Near His Heart.

What is Near His Heart?

HOPE – Bringing hope and encouragement to families in the midst of unique situations.

The purpose is to connect, fellowship.

One night, every year, parents, loved ones and other family members unite for a night of respite. Some families drive up to an hour or more to attend this night.

Together.

That is the pull, getting to be with others who walk the path of disability. To be loved on.
For one night, we show up, most of the time, we even get dressed up for the occasion.
When we walk through the door, smiles are abundant. What a sweet feeling. We find our place to check in, pass off our children to their “buddy” for the night… watch them be whisked away for a night of fun, God, games.

Then we breathe.
We’ve made it another year to Near His Heart.

It has been reported that 25% of all families are affected by disability, and every one of them struggle with questions like, “Why me? Why us? How could God let this happen? Will He fix this?”  No one should ever be left to travel alone. We need each other. This is where Near His Heart fills that need.

Near His Heart is a disability ministry banquet, held at Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama, founded by Anthony and Julie Brown.
Near his Heart was created to meet the needs and nurture the faith of the entire family.

We know that for families including a child with special needs, one of the biggest challenges is finding time to nurture your own faith.
At Near His Heart, they come alongside families and all of their children, recognizing that every child is created in God’s image with a special purpose and plan.

Near His Heart has been one of my favorite nights of the year for more than seven years. Each year a speaker is brought in to speak life into families who are in the trenches of disability. Speak Hope.
Music brings an aspect of worship, that is, oh so sweet. The worship team works tirelessly to bring words our families need to hear.

Closing, it’s usually with a tear in many eyes, as we watch a beautiful slide show of our children, showcasing the blessings and beauty of each and every one.

Near His Heart 2019, did not disappoint, as I woke up this morning, thankful for the opportunity to attend this ministry banquet once again and it’s always bitter sweet, as we all wait patiently for next year.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” (Proverbs 31:8)

Near His Heart, once again, touched MY HEART.
