Day in the Life

1

When I woke up this morning, I got to pick out my own breakfast cereal and even though I had to ask for milk 14 times, because I don’t think my dad could hear me, that milk was real nice.

Later, Mom picked out my clothes and helped me put them on. Once I put my shirt on, it became obvious to me that green stripes are lava. I can not wear lava. Mom sighed really deep and drank some of her coffee, but she let me change shirts. Tiger shirts are not lava.

I told mom I could get in the car all by myself – and it only took me 8 minutes. Which is 7.5 minutes longer than it would have taken her to put me in. I picked out a car toy to play with, but my brother’s car toy looked like it would be more fun. We traded, brothers are OK. Sometimes.

My teacher was so excited to see me this morning. She let me pick out a book and I got to sit in her lap while she read. Later, one of my friends tried to take my favorite toy away from me so I stuck it in my mouth. Now no one would get to play with it because it goes in the yuck bucket. After we play, it is the best part of the day –  when we sit in chairs and eat snack. “Tummy to Table” is what my teacher reminds me when my snack tries to jump onto the floor or falls in my lap. You really gotta watch that applesauce.

When we get to go to the playground, I feel grumpy about something that I can not quite put my finger on, but then I see the purple ball that I really like and feel happy again. I throw and chase that ball over and over…until one of my friends says that the ball is a horse and sits on it. My teacher reminds me to share. Since the purple ball does not fit in my mouth, I guess I have to find something different to play with.

During quiet time, when my teacher turns out the lights, I am sure that I am not sleepy at all. When she turns on the soft music, I think this is a good time to tell my friend that I have on a tiger shirt, but then my eyes get heavy and I forget. Some of my friends are still asleep when I wake up, so I help out by grabbing each of my friends on their nose. That is a great way to wake people up.

During the afternoon, we play some more and then I get to do some art. My teacher wants to put my thumb in some paint, but I think the picture will be more effective if I use my whole hand. Yep, that is better. The grandparents are gonna love this one!

I feel very excited when Mom comes to pick me up, I show her the hand print picture and then open the child-proof gate to save her the effort. She has been working all day, so I try to make things easy for her. Once we are in the car, my brother and I ask beg to roll our windows “up.” Mom points out that they are up, but we can roll them down. I see 6 dogs on the way home. Six – can you even believe it!? My brother says dogs only come out on Fridays, but he was wrong.

I give my dad a big hug when we get home and go play before TV time. Something about that TV – it is mesmerizing. Once it starts, I can barely think about anything else or make myself look away. I wish I could watch TV all day, but it is time to wash hands for supper. Mom helps me with that. She is very good at making the water change temperature.

Cold.

Too Cold. Hotter.

Too Hot.

It is very complicated to make hand washing water be the exact right way.

At the table, dad promises that I liked this food the last time we had it.  I do not remember what he is talking about. They make me try a bite. They were right, it is delicious. I eat everything on my plate and ask for more but once I get it, I am not hungry anymore. After supper and bath,  I pick out my book for bedtime. I choose one that is very familiar. Mom says she has read it a million times. That must mean that she loves it a lot.

Almost as much as she loves me.

Codi grew up in a college town where she graduated (twice), met her husband, and still lives. When she had 3 kids in 3.5 years, no one was more surprised than her. Fortunately, instead of driving her crazy (although it was a close one), motherhood has brought her into a deeper faith and a daily reliance on the Lord. Her day job has her working with college students that she believe will change the world if they can get off of their phones long enough to get to work. Her husband is an incredible special education teacher and the kids are silly, whiny, funny, and loud which, as it turns out, is the perfect combination of their parents.

  1. I actually laughed out loud at this! Loved the thoughts behind the actions as you captured the world of a preschooler!
