Go to the Gogue

Hi my name is Julie and I am a lifelong music lover, and I especially LOVE going to concerts. I’ve seen concerts ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to Radiohead. One of my favorite musicians to see live is Lyle Lovett. The last time I saw him and his amazing band (front row!!!!), I leaned over and asked my husband if he would take me to concerts even when we are old(er) and gray(er). All this not to brag but just to say, music is one of my love languages (up there with coffee and back scratches).

So the opening of the Jay and Susie Gogue Center is a dream come true. A quick 15-minute drive up the road from our home in Opelika and we can see concerts, plays, and dances. When tickets first went on sale, we quickly and excitedly bought tickets for a few of the different series’ that are offered.

Last week was the official opening week for the Gogue Center, and I went to all three of the first shows. I was entertained with a highly acclaimed singer with the most beautiful soprano voice, singing opera songs in Italian (Renee Fleming). Then there was a woman whom I’ve watched on a couple of television shows who also is a Tony winner, singing songs from Broadway shows (Sutton Foster). Both of these women were accompanied by amazing piano players. Last but not least, I sat in wonder as an array of talented musicians gathered onstage with unique interpretations of modern songs in 1920s fashion (Postmodern Jukebox). There were not only such gifted singers in this band, but lots of instruments (including a washboard at one point!) and a tap dancer like I’ve never seen. I can now say that I’ve seen someone tap dance to both Thriller and the Mario Bros. theme song!

I wasn’t overly familiar with any of these artists, but what a treat it was to have these experiences! Each one so different, interesting, and enjoyable. And in such a beautiful venue. I left each show with a full feeling in my heart and anticipation of what is to come.

Speaking of shows, I also went to see Annie at Opelika High School last week. The students are so talented that, when watching, it’s easy to forget that this is a high school production! The sets and costumes are fun to see too. I felt so proud for all the students at the end of the show because it’s very apparent that they, along with their teachers and families, worked so hard to put on a top-notch production.

We are so lucky to live in a community that values the arts. I’m so impressed that things I may have traveled hours to see, I can now enjoy so close by! I encourage you to check out the Gogue Center calendar to see what is on the horizon, and go be entertained as soon as you can!
