LEAPS Mentoring is Having a Mother-Son Picnic

0

Last year I wrote about the LEAPS Mentoring Mother-Son Date Night with great anticipation. It was scheduled for March 2020 and along with most events last year, was cancelled when the world shut down and quarantine began. Now that the vaccines are here and the future looks hopeful, it’s time to have some fun! LEAPS Mentoring is putting on a Mother-Son Picnic at Kiesel Park next Saturday, the 29th from 12:00 to 3:00 pm. The picnic will include music, dancing, food, a photo booth, games, and prizes! Get your tickets here and be sure to follow LEAPS Mentoring on Facebook

Read the original post I wrote for last year’s event to learn more about LEAPS Mentoring:

It’s that time of year again. Prepare yourselves for all the cuteness that comes from daddies and their daughters dressing up for the annual Daddy-Daughter Dances. I personally cannot wait until my daughter is old enough to participate with her daddy. In my highly biased opinion, they will be the cutest! But wait, you may ask, isn’t there something for moms? I mean, let’s be honest. We do the heavy lifting in the kiddo department. Well, you’re in luck! Enter the Big Top Ball, a Mother-Son Date Night put on by the LEAPS Mentoring program. LEAPS Mentoring is an organization founded and run by Gregory Johnson, an Auburn police officer and my classmate in the Opelika Chamber of Commerce’s 20 Under 40 leadership program this year. Greg was coming in contact with a lot of young men through his job in law enforcement. He started LEAPS, which stands for Leadership, Education, Achievement, Partnership, and Service, in 2014 as a way to build positive interactions with young men in the hopes of helping them become better citizens. The annual Mother-Son Date Night is a way of giving boys a chance to learn about being gentlemen and treating women, in this case their mothers, with respect.

Every year, the 20 Under 40 class selects a service project. When Greg told us about his organization, it was a no-brainer. Our goal this year is not just to help Greg throw a fantastic Mother-Son Date Night, but also to set his organization up with the tools to make it sustainable in the future. If you’ve got a young son or know someone who does, please consider participating!

Last thing, if anyone has a son I could borrow for the evening, please let me know! I want to go too!
