‘Twas the Night Before School Starts

Three Backpacks

‘Twas the night before school starts and all through our home

The kids were excited, while I chanted “ohmmmmm.”

The backpacks were hung on their hooks with some care.

Our family’s “drop zone” would soon be laid bare.

The kids were excited for new sights and sounds,

We’d visited classrooms and made all the rounds.

My husband’s a teacher, so he went down early

Knowing the next day would bring all kinds of hurry.

When out on our porch – finally ‘lone in my thoughts:

“Man, this summer went fast and was real stinkin’ hot!”

I soon started doubting, “Did I do enough stuff,

Was I fun, adventurous, loving, not rushed?”

So I did what moms do in twenty-nineteen

I pulled out my cell phone, my pictures to glean

When there to my darkly bagged eyes did appear,

Sweet smiles, sweaty kids -WHEW, I’ve nothing to fear.

With a quick little trip down summertime lane

I relaxed and could feel some stress start to wane.

We did it, we lived our summer life well!

Dear all moms and dads, let’s agree to not dwell:

On the meltdowns, the tantrums, the blazing hot days

On the no naps, the whining, the nerves that were frayed.

Let’s welcome the schedules! The routines! The lot!

Celebrate Summer’s end with all that we’ve got.

They tell us we’ll miss this, and some days I get it

But most days I try not to loose all my….patience.

I can love summer and back to school too,

So let’s trade the pool toys for notebooks and glue.

Yes, summer was fun in it’s own kind of way

Now I’m off to bed,’cause tomorrow’s the day

I’ll kiss sleeping heads and tuck them in tight

Happy School Start to all – and to all a Good-Night!

Codi Plaster
Codi grew up in a college town where she graduated (twice), met her husband, and still lives. When she had 3 kids in 3.5 years, no one was more surprised than her. Fortunately, instead of driving her crazy (although it was a close one), motherhood has brought her into a deeper faith and a daily reliance on the Lord. Her day job has her working with college students that she believe will change the world if they can get off of their phones long enough to get to work. Her husband is an incredible special education teacher and the kids are silly, whiny, funny, and loud which, as it turns out, is the perfect combination of their parents.
