Single Mom in the Small Town

Guest submission by Stephanie Treadwell:

Although I adore the thought of being like Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex in the City,” my life is far from her glitz and glam. I remember watching the show in high school and wanting to move to New York to purse an acting and singing career. I chose a much different path. I decided to stay in Auburn and get my degree from Auburn University and marry my high school sweetheart.

Then, in my sophomore year of college, I discovered I was pregnant with my son. I was utterly devastated. It wasn’t part of my plan. Yes, I was married, and I had a great support team, but this is not how it was supposed to happen. I was so resentful. I cried for days. Then, I realized it was time to get it together. I promised myself that I would finish school and I didn’t want any special treatment. I took the Tiger Transit to classes and when I became so big that all I could do was waddle, my mother would drive me to my class and drop me off and come back and pick me up. I had my son during Spring Break and returned to school the next week to take my final.

The name that my son answers to is my favorite character and love interest of Carrie’s on “Sex and the City.” I spent many a night rocking him to sleep while watching the show in syndication so I could start my all-nighter of studying or writing papers. I finished school and went on to law school. I dropped out of law school after my first year but that is a story for another day. This is just an intro. I am now a single mom (also another story for another day) of a soon to be 14-year-old that is the greatest guy I have ever known.  So, although my life didn’t turn out exactly as I imagined, I know it turned out exactly how it should. Sometimes I come across the show or hear the theme music, and I must stop and smile. I might not have the closet of Carrie Bradshaw, but I wear as many hats, if not more, than she ever did in the show.
