4 Trick-or-Treat Alternatives

Halloween is almost here and, as with most things this year, we are not back to “normal”. If you are feeling iffy about going door-to-door, keep reading for some fun alternatives to schlepping kids up and down the road & knocking on doors.

Three kids in costumes on a front porch.

-Reverse Trick-or-Treating: Buy or make some festive treats, then load up to drop them off at your friend’s houses. Take turns ringing the doorbell and running back to the car or let them know when you’re on the way and have a driveway chat. Everyone can wear costumes for the ride or you could pick a fun family theme like the “Brownie Bandits” or “Candy Crusaders” and dress accordingly. Pro Tip: Choose a time not designated for your city’s trick-or-treat night to avoid crowded streets and pedestrians.

-Halloween Egg Hunt: Crack open your eggs from Easter and fill them with Halloween candy. Hide them around the yard or house for your kids to find. The thrill of the hunt combined with the sugar high could just make them forget all about ringing doorbells!

-New Family Tradition: As we enter into the holiday gauntlet that is the last quarter of the year, think about starting a new family tradition. A spaghetti and scary movie night might work great with your crew, or you could try a “we all scream for ice cream” sundae bar. Drive around with a fallish beverage and look for jack-o-lanterns & yard decorations like you would for Christmas lights.

-Long Distance Parade: For family and friends that are spread out or far away, plan a zoom, facetime, skype, or marco polo where the kids can show off their costumes by marching down the hall or across the living room one by one. Encourage everyone to share in something simple like popcorn, s’mores, or watching the same movie. It will alllllmost be like you’re doing it together.

We hope you enjoyed these alternatives for some great Halloween fun. In a year where the treats are hard to come by – and the tricks are all too plentiful – may we appreciate when and where we find them. Hope you and your family have a spooky-sweet celebrated October!

Codi grew up in a college town where she graduated (twice), met her husband, and still lives. When she had 3 kids in 3.5 years, no one was more surprised than her. Fortunately, instead of driving her crazy (although it was a close one), motherhood has brought her into a deeper faith and a daily reliance on the Lord. Her day job has her working with college students that she believe will change the world if they can get off of their phones long enough to get to work. Her husband is an incredible special education teacher and the kids are silly, whiny, funny, and loud which, as it turns out, is the perfect combination of their parents.
